What Are Window Shutters?

What exactly are window shutters? It’s simple, really. Window shutters are a style of window dressing that is a permanent fixture on your window. They provide next-level light control and privacy options thanks to their louvres (don’t worry, we’ll explain that too later on).

What types of Shutters Are There?

There’s endless variations of shutters, well, maybe not endless, but too many to list here. You’ll be able to find a shutter for your specific situation though, even if you have a really awkward custom shape window, we can sort it.

Window shutters aren’t the only type of shutters, you can get shutters for patio doors, bifold doors and French doors too. There are various shutter materials too. You can get shutters made form UPVC which is waterproof and perfect for bathrooms, MDF which gives a super high-quality finish that is resistant to fading and scratches. Hardwood and Basswood, both fantastic options.

What is a louvre?

I told you we’d cover this later! A louvre is the slats in your shutters. They essentially control the amount of light and privacy you want. Tilt them up to fully close them and tilt them down to control privacy, but still allow light in.

Where did shutters come from?

There’s a long history of shutters. They used to be a lot more about practicality than looks though. In Ancient Greece they were for temperature control and as a way to battle the elements.

The industrial revolution is when things started to look more like they do today. Shutters became a mass produced items, as different styles became the way to show yours  where better than you neighbours.

Your perception of a shutter is probably a plantation shutter. These came about once we’d settled in the Americas, our European genes couldn’t deal with the heat in the south of what is now the USA so we used shutters to control the temperature. You’ve probably seen them before on the big sugar and cotton plantation mansions if you’ve been to America before.

Why Choose Shutters Today?

Shutters are still the world class window dressing for a many reasons:

Timeless Appeal

Window shutters are a timeless look, you can match them perfectly to fit your modern home and traditional home. They’re particularly good for traditional Victorian houses though, helping them reclaim some of their original look.

Energy Efficiency

Because they’re made to measure, you get a great seal on your window. That’s fantastic for insulation and keeping that pesky draft out! This can save you so much money in the long term, and given how long shutters can last, you’re likely going to get your money back on the initial cost.

Property Value Increase

Shutters are seen as a luxury premium upgrade. Think posh, elegant, sophisticated, all the things your prospective buyer will want to come across as.

Durability

As I mentioned earlier, shutters are really durable. They don’t get blown around by wind like blinds do, they don’t need to roll up and down like blinds do so they last for ages!

Are They Right For You?

If you value timeless style, amazing practicality, incredible energy efficiency and a higher property value, then yes absolutely. If you don’t want any of that, they’re probably still for you. So book a free home visit today!
